Idaho Wolf Shooting Triggers Call for Firing of Josh Bransford (aka “Pinching”)

BOISE, Idaho, April 4, 2012 (ENS) – It takes a lot to shock and sicken seasoned wildlife advocates, but the deliberate torture and shooting of a trapped wolf in northern Idaho by an employee of the U.S. Forest Service has. The incident in mid-March has triggered calls for both federal and state investigations leading to dismissal of the employee involved.
The nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity Tuesday sent letters to both the Forest Service and the Idaho Attorney General requesting investigations into the actions of Forest Service employee Josh Bransford, who posted online photos of a wolf he had trapped that was then non-fatally shot by people who saw the animal from a nearby road.
“A year ago, that wolf was protected as a member of an endangered species, but last month he was trapped, tortured and killed thanks to an underhanded congressional rider that’s also responsible for the deaths of hundreds of other wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains,” said the Center’s Michael Robinson.
“A lack of respect for the balance of nature is leading to a war on wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains,” Robinson said.
Stripping wolves of federal protection last spring transferred management of the animals to five states, including Idaho. Since the de-listing last May, Idaho has cut its wolf population by about 40 percent, from roughly 1,000 to 570, Idaho Fish and Game biologists estimated last month.
The delisting was required by a rider on a budget resolution passed by Congress in April 2011 that funded the federal government for the remainder of the 2011 fiscal year.
The rider was attached to the federal budget bill by Senator Jon Tester, a Montana Democrat, and Representative Mike Simpson, an Idaho Republican, and marked the first time an animal or plant has been removed from the endangered species list by Congress.
The treatment of this trapped wolf became public knowledge on March 19 when Bransford, using the name “Pinching,” posted his story and pictures on the hunters and trappers website www.Trapperman.com.
A posted photo shows the Forest Service employee smiling in front of the still-living wolf.
“I got a call on Sunday morning from a FS [Forest Service] cop that I know. You got one up here as there was a crowd forming. Several guys had stopped and taken a shot at him already,” wrote Pinching. “The big, black male wolf stood in the trap, some 300-350 yards from the road, wounded – the shots left him surrounded by blood-stained snow.”
The posting appears to have been removed from the Trapperman.com site.
Idaho state law makes it a crime for a person who “causes or procures any animal to be cruelly treated, or who, having the charge or custody of any animal either as owner or otherwise, subjects any animal to cruelty.” The law also requires that “destruction of animals for population control,” the stated reason for wolf trapping, be carried out humanely.
“Making it possible for potshots to be taken at a captive animal – and photographing the results – before ending the wolf’s suffering appears to violate this law, as well as common decency,” said Robinson.
“These photos make plain that the trapping and hunting of wolves being allowed by the state of Idaho are less wildlife-management techniques than scapegoating of wolves,” Robinson said. “This egregious torture of a wolf needs to be investigated by Idaho’s attorney general and the Forest Service, and Josh Bransford should be fined and dismissed from his position.”
In his letter to Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, the Center’s Executive Director Kieran Suckling wrote, “On behalf of our over 350,000 members and online supporters, we request an investigation into whether the trapping and treatment of the wolf depicted in the photograph below by Nez Perce National Forest employee Josh Bransford constitutes employee misconduct, and further, that you consider terminating Mr. Bransford’s employment. It is our contention that the trapping of the wolf, which occurred on the weekend of March 16-18, 2012, violates Title 25, Chapter 35 of the Idaho Code, prohibiting animal cruelty.”
“We are sickened by the wholesale slaughter of an animal, the gray wolf, that, but for last year’s wolf delisting rider, would still qualify for protection under the Endangered Species Act in Idaho and elsewhere in the northern Rocky Mountains,” the letter states.
Removal of Endangered Species Act protection for the wolf was based on the assurances of state game agencies that they would manage wolves to ensure survival of the species and approval of state wolf management plans by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Idaho has since abandoned the targets of its state plan and instead said it will seek to reduce the population from roughly 1,000 wolves to as low as 150 wolves. Since the delisting, 375 wolves have been reported killed in Idaho. Idaho’s wolf hunt remains open in portions of the state.
“The disturbing photos of this animal’s needlessly painful death are a symbol of the loss of hundreds of wolves in Idaho and Montana and the unraveling of their ecosystems as a consequence,” said Robinson. “Last year’s wolf-delisting rider was premised on trusting the states to treat wolves like other wildlife. But that trust was clearly misplaced by Congress. Without the safety net of the Endangered Species Act, Idaho’s very clearly persecuting wolves, not ‘managing’ them. It’s brutal and it has to stop.”

This guy is a freak. Would love to see him fired, but not before he steps into one of his own traps, barefoot, with no one around for 200 miles on every side.

Bransford you are a dickless sadist. Real men do not have to prove their machismo by torturing and murdering non humans. If you are in need of a stump between your legs look into penile implants — a much more benign solution to your rage than taking it out on those who can’t fight back. No doubt your childhood was replete with all manner of animal cruelty — tearing wings off insects and unloading your venom on those who were “safe” and unable to pummel you into a pile of pulp, which is what you deserve.
It sickens and enrages me to think my tax dollars are feeding scum like you. I can only pray that you get as good as you have given. A soup line and a nice cozy cardboard box under a bridge for the rest of your miserable worthless life would be too good for you.
I hope your swaggering arrogance and exceedingly bombastic mouth have cost you your forestry job and any hope of future employment — anywhere.

I would also like to add that the life of this ONE WOLF was worth more than the lives of millions of brainless, sociopaths like you — the true parasitic vermin infesting and destroying our planet.

Thank you, Brennan. I couldn’t have said it any better.

JOSH BRANSFORD, and anyone like you, is a total piece of shit and a poor excuse for a human being. Anyone who enjoys watching another living being bleed and suffer through your hand of cruelty, and SMILE while this poor wolf (and God knows what else you have tortured) is not worth a life on this earth.
I hope that you when you go to meet your maker, you are given the same torture, while others look on AND LAUGH.
you’re a a douche bag and i would like to spit in your very ugly face.
you make me sick that you could honestly take pleasure in watching this wolf suffer and bleed to death with a gaping wound. you mustn’t have any conscience and it makes me wonder what you must do to women and children behind closed doors.
burn in hell

[...] Josh Bransford (aka “Pinching”) from the Trapperman.com forum is the sadistic degenerate that trapped a wolf, pictured above, and then gleefully encouraged his fellow slack-jawed rednecks to use it for target practice! A federal investigation has been called for and activists are demanding his dismissal. [...]

What we have here is a coward, the ultimate bully. This “man” cannot and will not take on anyone who has a chance of beating him, because he is a coward. He has to resort to traps so he can shoot at a distance. What a little bitch. Josh Bransford what makes you think you have the right to take another creature’s life? The life of this wolf was worth more than the life of your sorry ass. This creature was beautiful, while you on the other hand, are absolutely disgusting, ugly, and not to mention, fat. Go back to your bell tower.

I cannot believe this goes on in the era of ‘civilization’??! And our government is paying them…FOR WHAT?? Go ahead and put a nasty toothy clamp around his left ankle now, I’ll get there in due time with all my guns and see what both his and her face look like as I target practice. THESE PEOPLE WALK THE STREETS FOR GODS SAKE. I am e-mailing him directly next. Shame on him, his family, his friends and our government.
